Windows

“I think it’s fair to say that personal computers have become the most empowering tool we’ve ever created. They’re tools of communication, they’re tools of creativity, and they can be shaped by their user.”
— Bill Gates, Microsoft Co-Founder

A Visionary Operating System
An operating system is the fundamental software that allows a computer to operate. Microsoft released their first operating system product in 1980, a version of Unix called Xenix.

Microsoft’s first successful operating system was MS-DOS4 or Microsoft Disk Operating System, which Microsoft wrote for IBM5 in 1981.

In response to the growing interest in graphical user interfaces (GUI), Microsoft introduced Windows on November 20, 1985 as a graphical operating system shell for MS-DOS.
Microsoft Windows came to dominate the world’s personal computer market with over 90% market share, overtaking Mac OS, which had been introduced in 1984.

As of April 2013, the most recent versions of Windows are as follows:
Personal Computers – Windows 8
Mobile Devices – Windows Phone 8
Server Computers – Windows Server 2012
Embedded Devices – Windows Embedded 8
